The Insurance Institute of Jamaica (IIJ) was founded on 22 May 1956 by visionaries from both the life and general insurance sectors of the local insurance industry. The first president was John Hatchard of the Jamaica Claims Bureau and first Secretary, Fredrick Rowlands [Father of David (JIIC) & Ian Rowlands (VMI) ] The Institute started with a membership of 400 persons. The principal purpose of the insitute was to promote insurance education and professionalism in the insurance industry; hence the institute immediately became affiliated with the Chartered Insurance Intitute of London with whom insurance staff were encouraged to pursue the two main professional examinations offered at the time - ACII and FCII.
